Magnetising is a way to increase the real value of every model you have in your collection. Adding an alternative weapon makes you get more value for every dollar/pound spent.
Frequent changes in the Meta make some weapons weaker and others stronger. Instead of having several models you can have just one and change the weapon according to your needs.
Besides, the magnetisation of some models allows easier and safer transport of even large resin models.
Everything seems to be cool, but magnetising is a bit of a bother for beginner modelers, so here are some tricks to help you find the right magnet for your needs.
 
Ok. But what kind of magnets should you use? How to get down to it? What size will be suitable for the part? Many of us hobbyists have the same problem and we have tried to make this listing as helpful as possible for your hobby.

Please note the pictures in this listing. We have put both the model bits and the magnets on them. So you will be able to easily estimate whether a given magnet size suits your needs. 
The heavier and larger the part you want to magnetise, the thicker the magnet should be.
Below you will also find a short tutorial for all those interested in magnetising models.

Magnetizing Tutorial

2x1mm magnet is an ideal magnet where you have the possibility to drill the figure.

The thicker the magnet, the greater the attraction it has. In case of hands and weapons of marines and models of similar size (small models, infantry) 2x1mm magnet is very strong but also 1x1 may be sufficient.


Always choose magnets that are strong enough to support the weight of the plastic/resin you place on them.   It is important that you are able to adjust the position of the magnetised limb/arm and that it does not change position by itself.

Use a sharp modelling knife to mark the centre of where you want to place the magnet and turn the knife many times to make a small guide hole.

 

Simply drill the figure and pour some glue into the drilled hole and then insert the magnet.  Before gluing, make sure that you have placed the magnet in the correct direction outwards so that both magnets are attracted to each other.

The ideal magnetisation is when you cannot see at first glance that the model has been magnetised. Therefore try to drill the magnetised parts and use the correct thickness.

Very thin and wider magnets can be used to join limbs and parts that do not move (for example, a hand connected to a bolt or a sword). An example is the 4mmx1mm used on Space Marines hand. It is good to paint the magnet in the same colour as the one used on the figure.

It is best to use Super Glue for bonding the magnets. To speed up the drying process you can use Army Painter super glue activator.

To magnetise banners and heavier items in the infantry you can use a 2x2mm magnet.

Magnets often have very shiny smooth surfaces and it is difficult to paint on them. After placing and pasting the magnet in the hole you can apply a layer of glue on the visible part of the magnet and wait until it dries. Then paint the visible part to your chosen colour.

Which magnet size should I choose for miniatures?

A 2×1 mm disc suits infantry weapon swaps, while 3×1 mm is a practical step up for arms and small components. Sizes around 3×2 to 5×2 mm work well for basing and larger parts, with 5×3 mm and above better suited to vehicles, large models and army transport. Each listing includes a calculated pull figure in grams so you can compare sizes on the same basis.

What does the N42 magnet grade mean?

The grade describes the magnetic material: at identical dimensions, a higher number generally produces more pull. N52 is typically around 20–25% stronger than N42 at the same size, but increasing the magnet's diameter or thickness usually makes a larger practical difference than changing grade alone. Our range is clearly specified as N42.

How do I keep the polarity consistent?

Before separating the stack, mark one face with a permanent marker and use that mark as your polarity reference. Dry-fit every pair before applying adhesive, and glue the two halves while the magnets are still attracting each other in the intended orientation. Reversing one magnet is one of the most common magnetisation mistakes.

What size hole should I drill for a magnet?

Use a drill matching the magnet diameter; for a designed 3D-printed socket, allow roughly 0.1 mm extra diameter. Make the recess approximately the magnet thickness plus 0.2 mm for adhesive so the face can sit level with the surrounding surface. CA adhesive is suitable for fixing these magnets into plastic, resin or metal parts.

How should neodymium magnets be handled safely?

Swallowing two or more magnets can cause serious internal injury, so keep loose magnets away from children and use them only for adult hobby work. Neodymium magnets are also brittle and may chip if allowed to snap together. Bring them together slowly from the edge rather than letting their flat faces strike each other.
