Deer Fern stays green the whole year, so a planting made from it is not pinned to a season the way a dried or a spring sheet is. Its 38 group leaves arrive finished, the cutting and the colour both done, varying in size and in shade right across the sheet, which is enough to build shaded ground up in layers instead of one flat pass.
In the wild it keeps to damp, shaded forest ground, and that is the setting it reads most naturally in.
It is also cultivated as a very popular garden fern, so a tended garden suits it as readily as woodland.
Cosmopolitan in distribution, it is not a fern that fixes a scene to one part of the world.

Notes · Q & A
What do tuft sizes like 2mm, 4mm and 6mm mean?+
That's the grass fibre length. 2mm suits small bases and subtle ground cover, 4–6mm reads as fuller vegetation on 28–32mm miniature bases.
Are tufts self-adhesive?+
Most modern tufts peel off their sheet with adhesive on the underside — press onto the base, no glue needed. Loose static grass is applied over PVA instead.
How do I apply static grass?+
Brush PVA where you want grass, sprinkle or use an applicator, then tip off the excess once dry. An applicator makes fibres stand upright for a more natural look.
