Product overview

WWII Luftwaffe Tropical Colors is the theatre box of AK's Luftwaffe range: six 3rd Generation acrylics for Luftwaffe aircraft operating in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. The count explains itself — RLM 78 and RLM 79 were introduced as desert base colours in 1941, with RLM 80 applied as an additional upper-surface colour at depot or unit level, and in 1942 both earlier tones were replaced by new variants, so the box holds two years of each. AK adds that several factory-tropical Bf 109 fighters also reached units on the Eastern Front. The sixth bottle is the talking point: AK's RLM 83 is a blue, not the dark green the name was once attached to.

  • Set contains (6 × 17 ml): AK11830 RLM 78 (1941), AK11831 RLM 78 (1942), AK11832 RLM 79 (1941), AK11833 RLM 79 (1942), AK11834 RLM 80, AK11839 RLM 83
  • The RLM 83 question, in AK's own hedges: the blue "may have been used" for camouflaging aircraft over Mediterranean waters late in the war, and a field test around 1943 "is highly likely". Cross-check AK11718 Late War, where AK calls the dark green once identified as RLM 83 an RLM 81 variant
  • Matt finish throughout — no metallic or gloss member in the box
  • Acrylic colours for brush; for airbrush, dilute with water or AK11500 thinner
  • The box carries AK's printed "Scale Reduction Factor" mark, as on the rest of the 3GEN AIR range
  • Made by AK Interactive S.L. in Logroño, Spain

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
