AK Interactive Real Colors US Navy & USMC Aircraft Colors 1945-1980 contains three lacquer paints for American naval aircraft used from the end of the Second World War to the beginning of the 1980s. Dark Sea Blue covers the earlier overall finish, while Light Gull Grey and Insignia White form the later two-colour scheme. AK also notes that some carrier-based fighters moved to an overall Light Gull Grey finish from 1977. The paints are intended for controlled airbrush application.

  • Set contains (3 × 17 ml): RC925 Dark Sea Blue, RC889 Light Gull Grey FS 16440, RC891 Insignia White FS 17875
  • Lacquer-based Real Colors with a soft matt finish, ready for weathering
  • Overall Dark Sea Blue and the later Gull Grey over White scheme
  • Formulated for airbrush application; thin with RC701 or RC702 (or another lacquer-based thinner)

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
