AK Interactive's signature set for Calvin Tan gathers eighteen 3rd Generation acrylics he considers essential for painting a wide variety of WWII German uniforms in miniature, including 28 mm-scale figure painting. The shades are his personal mixes, and because wartime uniforms varied with use and origin, his mix ratios are a starting point rather than a rule. What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
