Product overview

Black Night is a 30 ml acrylic Deep Shade, used to drop deep contrast into a paint job — most often over dark base colours. Deep Shades give quick, simple shading on small-scale miniatures while keeping an overall matt finish, and they fit a three-step routine: base coat, Deep Shade, then a lighter highlight. Micro-dispersed pigments, under a micron across, sit in pure acrylic resin and pool in the recesses to deepen the shadows where the shade gathers.

  • Works over any base colour, and is especially suited to dark bases for high contrast.
  • Built around the Base / Deep Shade / Light three-step method for fast army painting.
  • Keeps a matt finish, and once dry it does not reactivate with water or its own medium.
  • Two light coats deepen the effect; its own medium, AK13010, adds transparency and eases the contrast.

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
