Product overview

Engraving to emphasize details such as panel lines, or even add custom detail is a popular advanced modeling method. Tamiya makes this advanced modeling technique easy with its line-up of engraving blades. These fine engraving blades are made from tungsten carbide, and offer a smooth, consistent finish. They are available in a choice of various thicknesses to meet your modeling needs.

• 0.25mm Fine Engraving Blade x1

• Total length: 25mm. Shank diameter: 2mm.

• Recommended for use with dedicated holder Item 74139 Engraving Blade Holder. Also compatible with Fine Pin Vise D (Item 74050) and D-R (Item 74112).

• Simply hold at a 45- to 60-degree angle and pull lightly across the surface to score it. Repeat as necessary to achieve a clearly-defined result.

• Comes in a case that can hold up to ten blades.

• A color-coded marking on the shank allows easy identification of blade thickness.

Notes · Q & A

What blade shape should I use for miniatures — #10 or #11?

The #11 pointed blade is the default for trimming mould lines and fine cuts. The curved #10 belly suits slicing and scraping over larger areas. Most modellers keep an #11 in the handle and swap shapes as the job needs.

When should I change a blade?

The moment it drags, tears plastic instead of slicing, or needs pressure to start a cut. A blunt blade slips and causes most knife injuries, and blades are far cheaper than the finger you save. Snap old ones into a sealed tin.

What's a razor saw for that a knife can't do?

A razor saw removes thick sprue gates, cuts resin blocks and separates parts too chunky to slice cleanly. Its fine kerf leaves a flat face with minimal material loss, where a knife would slip or wander on a thick section.

How do I scrape mould lines rather than cut them?

Hold the blade at 90 degrees to the surface and draw it backwards, shaving the raised line in light passes. Scraping controls depth far better than cutting and leaves a smooth surface that needs little or no sanding.
