Product overview

Tamiya Polishing Compound Coarse is the opening stage in the maker’s printed Coarse → Fine → Finish sequence. Developed for plastic models, it combines relatively large particles with a blend of hard and soft abrasive materials to smooth rough or uneven surfaces before finer polishing. Tamiya also identifies pre-paint preparation, clear parts and metal parts as suitable uses. This is the cutting stage rather than the final gloss pass; after polishing, remaining paste can be rinsed away with water.

  • Its purpose is to level a rough finish before the surface moves on to the smaller-particle Fine grade.
  • The Japanese product page specifies a blend of hard and soft abrasive materials with strong cutting action.
  • Clear components, metal parts and base preparation before painting are all named applications.
  • Any compound remaining after the job can be washed from the model with water.

Notes · Q & A

What does polishing compound do after sanding?

Polishing compound uses a finer abrasive action than ordinary sanding to reduce surface haze and fine preparation marks. It is a finishing step rather than a substitute for levelling deep defects, which should be corrected before polishing begins.

Why do polishing compounds come in different grades?

Different grades trade cutting action against final gloss. Starting with the least aggressive grade capable of correcting the surface reduces unnecessary material removal, while skipping a needed intermediate stage can leave earlier marks visible or make the final stage take longer.

What should I use to apply polishing paste?

Use a clean, soft cloth, foam pad or applicator recommended for the product and surface. A small, controlled amount is usually easier to assess than a heavy layer, which can spread residue and obscure whether the finish is improving.

Can I polish clear parts or painted surfaces?

Clear plastic can often be polished, although deeper damage may require prior correction with suitable fine abrasives. Paint hardness and compatibility vary, so allow the coating to harden fully and follow its maker's guidance before polishing. Remove residue only with the cleaner specified for the compound.
