Product overview

Sculpey Oven-Bake Clay Adhesive is made for joining raw or baked polymer clay and for attaching clay to suitable porous materials. It does not form a bond until the assembly is baked, leaving the pieces repositionable during setup without clamping. This makes it useful when adding raw details to an already-baked piece, assembling work in stages or joining delicate shapes without pressing them out of form.

  • Use the twist cap to control the flow, then bring pieces together with only light pressure to protect shapes and fine detail.
  • Suitable for raw-to-raw, raw-to-baked and baked-to-baked polymer clay joints.
  • Use with unfinished wood, paper or canvas; do not use it to bond clay to metal, glass or other non-porous surfaces.
  • Pre-bake wood and paper mache at 275 °F (130 °C) for 15 minutes before applying the adhesive.
  • Bake the joined assembly at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes; it must be baked to adhere.
  • Polyform describes the adhesive as translucent in colour, so a drop left at a joint all but disappears once the piece has been baked.

Notes · Q & A

What is an oven-bake adhesive for polymer clay?

It is a joining medium whose adhesive action is completed through heating rather than during initial assembly. This leaves time to align components and correct their position before the project enters the oven.

Can fresh clay be joined to an already-baked piece?

A compatible oven-bake adhesive can connect fresh clay to a previously cured component. The complete assembly must then tolerate another baking cycle so the new joint and the added clay can cure correctly.

Which other surfaces suit oven-bake clay adhesives?

Bare wood, paper products and unsealed canvas are typical porous candidates. Smooth metal, glass, glazed finishes and sealed surfaces should not be assumed compatible unless the adhesive manufacturer explicitly approves them.

Which baking schedule should I use for a joined assembly?

Check the instructions for both the adhesive and the clay being joined. Use only a temperature and duration permitted for every material in the assembly; if their requirements are incompatible, do not improvise a compromise.
