Product overview

GSW Liquid Mask 30ml is a turquoise masking fluid for protecting selected areas of a figure or model while the surrounding work is painted. Brush it onto the area to be covered and allow approximately 15 minutes to dry. GSW recommends at least two thin layers: together they give the film enough body to lift by pulling without tearing into small fragments. The fluid is water-soluble while wet, allowing its intensity to be adjusted, drying to be delayed and fresh residue to be cleaned more easily.

  • Apply it only to areas that should remain unpainted while the surrounding section is completed.
  • Water can be used to adjust the strength of the mask, delay drying and simplify cleanup before the film forms.
  • Build the mask with at least two thin applications so the dried layer has enough body for removal.
  • Once painting is finished, lift an edge and pull the film away from the model.
  • A layer applied too thinly may break into smaller pieces during removal.

Notes · Q & A

What is liquid masking fluid used for?

Liquid masking fluid temporarily covers small, irregular or recessed areas that are awkward to protect with tape. It is useful where a shaped barrier needs to follow surface detail, while tape remains convenient for straight edges and larger flat areas. Check the individual product instructions before applying it over delicate paint or an unfamiliar finish.

How do I apply masking fluid so it removes cleanly?

Use controlled, even coverage and build enough thickness for the dried film to hold together when lifted. Very thin, patchy areas are more likely to tear or leave fragments behind. Avoid flooding panel lines or deep recesses unless you can reach the dried edge easily, and follow the layer guidance given for the specific fluid.

How long can masking fluid stay on painted work?

Remove it after the surrounding painting stage is complete rather than treating it as long-term protection. The safe contact period depends on the fluid, the paint beneath it and how fully that paint has dried. Test on a spare sample when working over a delicate, recently applied or unfamiliar coating.

What brush should I use, and how do I clean it?

Use a dedicated inexpensive or older brush rather than a favourite detail brush, because masking residue can collect around the ferrule and damage the point. Clean the tool immediately while the fluid is still wet, using the method stated by its maker. Do not assume every masking fluid uses the same cleaner.
