Product overview

The DSPIAE ES-A is the original rechargeable sanding pen for small plastic parts, using an ABS marker-shaped body and a head that travels backwards and forwards rather than spinning. The supplied consumable is 3M self-adhesive sandpaper fitted to a moulded carrier that clips into the pen. This version trades the lower maximum cycling rate for the longer unloaded running time of the pair.

  • Its three gears operate at 2800, 3100 and 3600 cyc./min.
  • The reciprocating movement has a 2.5 mm stroke with a ±0.1 mm tolerance.
  • Maximum pressure rises by gear through 320, 360 and 430 g.
  • USB-C charging takes about 20 minutes before the stated unloaded run time of approximately 100 minutes.
  • The supplied paper selection ends at #1000.
  • Charging requires a 5 V / 3 A or lower supply; fast-charge is not supported.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
