What Is This?

The XL version of AK's painting handle, designed specifically for models on bases from 40 mm upward. Same ergonomic bottle-grip concept as the standard AK9563, but with a significantly wider platform and jaw system built for the bigger bases that monsters, heroes, cavalry, and display pieces sit on.

The wide platform accepts rectangular, square, round, and oval bases — from 40 mm rounds through large cavalry ovals and scenic display bases. Multiple grip slots along the platform edges accommodate different base shapes and sizes.

This is the handle for the models you spend the most time on: centrepiece characters, large monsters, cavalry units, and display projects where paint quality really matters and you need comfortable control for hours.

Worth Knowing

⚠ Not for vehicles or huge terrain pieces. The XL handles larger bases comfortably, but full-size vehicles (tanks, knights, flyers) and large terrain boards are beyond what any handheld grip can manage.

⚠ Overkill for standard infantry. If you're painting 25–32 mm bases, the standard AK9563 is better sized. The XL platform would be unwieldy for small bases.

⚠ Heavy metal miniatures. Very heavy pewter models on large bases can feel top-heavy. Works best with plastic and resin — which is 95% of modern miniatures.

Sprue cutters or a hobby knife — what do I actually need?

Cutters remove parts from the sprue cleanly; the knife trims the leftover nub and mould lines. You'll want both — they do different jobs.

What's the difference between single-blade and double-blade cutters?

Single-blade cutters shear against a flat anvil for an ultra-clean cut with less stress on the plastic; double-blade cutters are tougher for general work.

How do I keep tools in good condition?

Cut plastic only (never metal sprues or wire) with precision cutters, replace knife blades often, and keep files clear with a brass brush.
