Product overview

Medium 240 grit remains a shaping abrasive: AK’s own stated purpose is final shaping. It suits the point after coarse removal, when the outline is established but small steps, seam transitions or shallow irregularities still need settling. AK describes these as precision sticks for sanding and polishing, attributes their longer life to abrasive quality and uses colour coding to distinguish grades quickly. That identification system is published without a named colour for this grade.

  • Choose this grade when the bulk of filler or raised material is already gone.
  • Its job is to settle the form before the smoothing work starts.
  • Progress once the profile is even and only the shallower abrasive pattern needs attention.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
