What Are Bristle Pencils?

Bristle pencils are retractable abrasive tools shaped like a mechanical pencil. Twist the barrel to extend or retract the bristle bundle — the shorter you set the bristles, the stiffer and more aggressive the abrading action. Extend them further for a softer, gentler touch. One tool, adjustable intensity.

AK Interactive's range covers five bristle materials, from gentle nylon to aggressive steel, so you can match the tool to the task: delicate cleaning, paint removal, rust scrubbing, surface keying, or controlled weathering effects like chipping, scratches, and wear marks.

For miniature painters and wargamers, these are a secret weapon for realistic weathering. Instead of painting on scratch effects, you physically create them — real micro-abrasions on the actual model surface that catch light and look convincing from any angle.

The Range — 5 Bristle Types, Soft to Aggressive
Use the variant selector above to choose your type. Each pencil is sold individually.
Abrasiveness: Gentle → Aggressive
Nylon
Hard Nylon
Brass
Fiberglass
Steel
AK9543 — Nylon Bristle Pencil ● GENTLE

The softest option — ideal for beginners who want to experiment without risking detail damage. Gentle, controlled micro-abrasions for subtle surface texture and light weathering.

Best for: Light cleaning, gentle derusting, subtle scratch texture on armour and ruins, cleaning tools, texturing XPS foam and soft plastic.

AK9544 — Hard Nylon Bristle Pencil ● MODERATE

The step up from standard nylon — a bridge between soft nylons and metal bristle types. Visible scratches and wear marks on plastic and resin without gouging deep grooves.

Best for: Edge weathering on vehicles and mechs, scraping back pigments for chipping, concrete/asphalt texture on 25–40 mm bases. The workhorse for wargaming weathering.

AK9540 — Brass Bristle Pencil ● MEDIUM-HIGH

The sweet spot between abrasive power and surface safety. Cleans and abrades effectively without the risk of deep scoring that steel can produce.

Best for: Cleaning metal parts, removing oxidation and tarnish, keying surfaces before painting, medium-intensity weathering scratches on vehicles, terrain, and large bases.

AK9542 — Fiberglass Bristle Pencil ● HIGH

Fine glass fibre filaments for controlled matting and micro-cleaning. Creates a very even, uniform scratch pattern — excellent for breaking gloss finishes and prepping photo-etch.

Best for: Derusting, removing burrs, matting glossy surfaces before washes/decals, subtle paint wear on armour panels, prepping PE for adhesion.

Fiberglass dust is a skin and lung irritant. Avoid touching the tip. Work over a wipeable surface and consider a dust mask for extended use.

AK9541 — Steel Bristle Pencil ● AGGRESSIVE

The most aggressive option — hardened steel bristles for maximum cutting power. Fast, deep material removal for when you need results quickly and aren't worried about subtlety.

Best for: Aggressive cleaning of metal parts, deep battle scratches, heavy chipping and gouged-metal effects, fast rust removal, stripping stubborn dried paint.

How the Retractable Mechanism Works

All five pencils share the same twist-barrel design. Rotate the end cap to adjust bristle length:

👉 Short extension = stiffer, more aggressive. Less flex means more force transferred directly to the surface. For heavy cleaning, deep scratches, and fast material removal.

👉 Long extension = softer, gentler. More flex absorbs pressure, giving a lighter touch. For delicate cleaning, subtle weathering, and fragile surfaces.

👉 Combine bristle type + extension length for a wide range of effects. A steel pencil on long extension can be surprisingly gentle; a nylon on short extension can be surprisingly bitey.

Pro Tips

👉 Start gentle, escalate if needed. Begin with nylon and work your way up. You can always add more abrasion — you can't undo deep scratches.

👉 Use directional strokes for realistic scratches. Work in the direction wear would naturally occur — along edges, around handles, across flat panels where gear would scrape.

👉 Combine with washes and pigments. Create physical scratches, then apply a dark wash over the area. The wash settles into real scratches, creating effects that painted-on weathering can't match.

👉 Brass for metal minis, nylon for plastic. Use brass or steel on metal parts for aggressive results, and nylon/hard nylon on plastic and resin for control without gouging.

Worth Knowing

Bristles are consumable. Like sandpaper, they wear down with use. Steel and brass last longest; fiberglass and nylon wear faster. The pencil body is not refillable.

Test on a hidden area first. Especially with brass, fiberglass, and steel — try on an inconspicuous part of the model before working on a visible surface.

Fiberglass safety. The AK9542 sheds micro-particles that can irritate skin and lungs. Don't touch the bristle tip with bare fingers, avoid breathing near the work area, and wipe down your desk afterwards.
